  • Good dog gut health is vital for your dog’s entire body. Food and diet impact your dog’s overall health and welfare. If he’s not able to break down the food you give, or has any sensitivities, he may have inflammation and an overgrowth of yeast that can lead to ear infections. Bernie’s helps break food down and helps your dog’s microbiome have just the right balance of good bacteria so you can prevent yeast overgrowth and ensure a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Some foods are hard for dogs to digest and can lead to an overgrowth of yeasts that affect your dog’s ears. Quality fiber helps your dog digest his food and move it through his system faster, and this can help prevent yeast overgrowth and buildup. It also makes sure toxins that cause inflammation leave your dog’s system more quickly. The perfect combination of Miscanthus grass, pumpkin and flaxseed in Bernie’s gives your dog the fiber they need battle ear infections.
  • Bernie’s Perfect Poop also combines prebiotics and probiotics to balance your dog’s gut microbiome. If your dog’s gut is imbalanced, harmful bacteria take over. Your dog will have an overgrowth of these bad bacteria and yeast, as well as inflammation, which can lead to ear infections. Prebiotics and probiotics in Bernie’s encourage optimal dog gut health to keep your dog’s ears free of excessive yeast growth and inflammation.
  • Every cell of your dog’s body needs nutrients. The combination of enzymes in Bernie’s breaks your dog’s food down. That means better nutrient absorption for your dog. It also means less chance of food intolerance or sensitivity, and less chance of issues that contribute to recurrent ear infections.
  • Bernie’s Perfect Poop is a 4-in-1 combination of fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and enzymes. Good dog gut health is the key to a happier, healthier life for your dog. Many times, ear infections stem from the gut. Bernie’s helps balance the digestive tract and provide a better gut microbiome. Better dog gut health means your dog has less yeast overgrowth, less inflammation and fewer ear infections.

What are ear infections in dogs?

An ear infection is pretty much just as it sounds—an infection of some sort in your dog’s ear(s). Your dog’s ears are pretty unique, and ear infections can happen in different parts.
Otitis Externa is inflammation or infection in the outside part of your dog’s ear—the parts of the ear you can see (and are usually red and icky with infection).

Otitis Media is inflammation or infection of your dog’s middle ear. If your dog has an ear infection on the external parts of their ear, there’s a chance they also have an infection of inner ear structures too.

Otitis Interna is an inflammation of your dog’s inner ear. If your dog suffers from Otitis Media and is not treated, it can spread and infect their inner ear.

While obvious signs of an ear infection in your dog include horrific odor and a lot of scratching on your dog’s part, sometimes, the signs can be subtler. You may see them lose their balance, or they can’t seem to hear you as well as they typically do.

Other symptoms of ear infections in dogs

  • Excessive ear scratching
  • Head-shaking
  • Rubbing ears on floor/furniture
  • Odor in ears
  • Wax-like discharge from ears
  • Red or crusty irritated skin inside their ear or around their ear
  • Head-tilting toward the suspected infected ear
  • Hair loss around the ear
  • Blood or mucous discharge from ears

Causes of ear infections in dogs

Your dog’s ear canal is shaped differently than yours. The L-shape canal of your dog lends itself to holding fluid longer as it drains. Where there’s moisture lingering, that’s typically a playground for excessive yeast/fungal growth. Most ear infections are caused by yeast, bacteria and excessive inflammation. Sometimes, ear mites are the culprit. The most common yeast excess that contributes to ear infections in dogs is the overgrowth of Malassezia pachydermatitis.

Like humans, dogs get rid of toxins in their system through their bowels, urinary tracts, skin and ears. When there’s excessive inflammation in your dog’s ear, they’re trying to get rid of toxins that are overwhelming their body, often stemming from their digestive system. Whether it’s allergy, sensitivity or intolerance or leaky gut, good dog gut health is key to helping prevent ear infections in dogs. This is especially important in dogs with ‘floppy’ ears, who may be more prone to ear infections.

Warning: If your dog has infections

Ear infections in dogs are painful. If you believe your dog has an external ear infection, it’s important you check it out with your vet and be sure the middle and inner ear of your dog are not also infected. Making sure your dog’s ears stay clean and dry is essential. So is ensuring they have optimal gut health to prevent inflammation and yeast overgrowth.

More information about dog ear infections

Good dog gut health is pivotal to overall health in your dog. If your dog’s gut is healthy, they won’t have the excess of yeast and inflammation that can contribute to recurrent canine ear infections. A balanced gut will help minimize inflammation and keep your dog’s microbiome healthy and balanced. A healthy gut is a healthier immune system. Dogs who have balanced guts also are less at risk for diseases or illnesses that may cause later problems.

Fiber may help with dog ear infections

Fiber helps battle ear infections in dogs because one of the biggest factors in yeast overgrowth is the presence of excess sugar and grain in your dog’s digestive system. Fiber aids your dog’s digestive system and keeps everything moving properly through the system. When your dog has the right fiber intake, their balanced microbiomes are capable of preventing yeast overgrowth, as they move excess yeast through their bowels more quickly. The right combination of insoluble and soluble fiber helps prevent yeast overgrowth and inflammation, but it also keeps your dog’s gut ready to fight any offensive bacteria and fungi that could contribute to their ear infections.

Prebiotics and Probiotics may help with ear infections in dogs

Yeast is a common fungus that lives in your dog’s gut, and in small numbers, calls your dog’s gut home to help him digest his food. A common type that is good in small amounts but bad for your dog if out of control is Candida albicans. Typically, Candida albicans is balanced by the friendly and helpful bacteria your dog has in his gut. They eat similar food in your dog’s digestive system and attach in similar places. If there is no healthy balance of this yeast and good bacteria, the yeast will irritate your dog’s gut lining cells and cause inflammation. This is known as Leaky Gut, and when it happens, yeast and toxins are no longer contained in your dog’s digestive tract. They can enter your dog’s blood and increase yeast infection all over, making your dog’s ears vulnerable to other yeast and bacteria.
Prebiotics and probiotics are vital fighters against Leaky Gut in dogs. They balance the digestive tract microbiome and keep your dog’s immune response strong.

The prebiotic in Bernie’s is Inulin, which acts as a fertilizer to feed the good bacteria in your dog’s lower digestive tract. When the good bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract gets the right nutrition, they thrive and keep your dog’s gut healthy and balanced.
Probiotics are the good bacteria in your dog’s gut. Adding that good bacteria through supplementation helps achieve good dog gut health by balancing helpful bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract. When the good bacteria get the proper nutrition, they too thrive, and the gut becomes more balanced and functions appropriately. When we add good bacteria with Bernie’s, we help achieve good dog gut health and prevent imbalances in the gut that lead to ear infections.

Enzymes may help with recurrent ear infection in dogs

Enzymes in Bernie’s Perfect Poop will help your dog’s digestive tract break food down better. Your dog’s digestive system is detailed and involves several organs. The healthier that system, the better your dog’s digestion will be. This means less chance of yeast overgrowth and inflammation, which means fewer ear infections too.
